Every app in this space charges in one of three ways. Each is built on a different assumption about who you are.
Monthly: the price of keeping your options open
You pay the most per month and carry the least risk. That premium buys you the freedom to walk away, and when the product behind a subscription can be retuned without warning, the freedom is worth something.
Best for: your first three months with any app, and anyone who uses these apps in bursts.
Yearly: a discount for people who have already stuck around
The saving is usually 30% to 50% off the monthly rate. The commitment itself is not the problem. What you are committing to is. Models get swapped, filters get retuned, and the companion who suited you in spring can feel different by spring's end. None of that gives you a refund on a yearly plan.
Best for: month four onward, on an app you have opened most days.
Try this before you click. Imagine the app switches its model tomorrow and your character feels a fifth different. Would you still want the other eleven months? If not, stay on monthly.
Credits: for people who guess their own use too low
Credits put a meter on the pricey stuff: images, voice minutes, video. They look cheap because the starter pack is small, and the bigger the bundle, the lower the price per credit, a design that nudges you up the ladder.
Two questions rarely get answered at checkout. Do unused credits expire? And does the subscription already include an allowance that refills? An app with media built into the plan makes the whole question disappear, which is the practical case for Candy AI over a cheaper subscription with a credit meter bolted on.
Best for: people who really do use media now and then, and no one else.
The order that costs you least
- Three days on the free plan. Judge the chat and nothing else. Some apps, Sweetdream (4.5 in our ranking) among them, earn a whole fortnight without paying.
- A single month on monthly billing. Now you can judge memory, repetition and media quality.
- Decide when the renewal comes up. If you opened the app on fewer than half the days, cancel.
- Yearly only from month four, and only for an app that passed step three twice.
One figure worth jotting down
Work out what you pay per day you actually opened the app. A US$15.99 plan used every day is about US$0.53 a day. The same plan opened four times in a month works out at US$4 a visit, and no promo code repairs that ratio.
Track it for a month. It answers the yearly-plan question better than any price table, ours included.
