Character builders are the showiest part of any companion app, and they lead most people into one trap: fussing over the decorative fields while ignoring the ones that carry real weight.
What follows is the order I'd work in if I wanted the character still enjoyable six weeks from now.
What happens to your input
Every box you fill turns into plain text. The app bundles it into a persona description that the model reads ahead of each reply, which is the character sheet I described in what is actually running inside these apps.
That has a blunt upshot. Boxes that produce rich, specific wording change how she talks. Boxes that produce a label hardly move the needle. Ticking "hair: auburn" contributes one word. Two sentences about how she deflects flattery will colour every reply.
Where to spend your effort, in order
1. Her manner of speaking
This is the top lever in every builder, and it's the box most often left blank.
Writing "friendly" achieves nothing, as it could describe practically anyone. Instead, spell out habits: sentence length, whether she fires questions back, what she does in a lull, how she reacts when she disagrees, whether she uses your name.
Compare a bare line:
Warm and playful.
with a detailed one:
Keeps sentences brief. Teases rather than praises. Asks something back about every second message. When she disagrees she says so outright and doesn't soften it later.
The detailed version yields a noticeably different personality from message one, since the model simply continues whatever pattern it's given.
2. Her off-limits list
Few builders include it, and few users fill it in, yet it prevents the most disappointment. Useful items: no pet names, no talk about your job, never announcing she's an AI, no constant apologising.
Dull as they are, these rules keep her from drifting into the same generic tone every other companion ends up with.
3. A backstory with texture
Forget "enjoys music". Go for "plays bass badly in a band that has rehearsed twice." The model can grab hold of a detail like that, and such details tend to resurface naturally. Broad statements produce broad, forgettable lines.
A handful of quirks is worth more than paragraphs of adjectives.
4. How you met
Some builders ask for the history between you two. It quietly sets the mood for every chat: "met last week" and "together three years" lead to very different talk even with the same personality underneath.
5. Appearance
Deliberately last. Looks matter for generated pictures, and since the image model redraws her from a written description each time, they barely affect the chat itself.
If pictures are the whole point, go to town. If you're here for conversation, a few tags do the job.
Three apps compared
Camsoda AI walks you through six stages: looks, personality, voice, backstory, how she addresses you, and topics she should steer clear of. That last one is rare here, and it's precisely the box I put second.
Secret Desires sets looks, voice and personality in a single flow and adds a community gallery of premade characters to build from. Kupid AI covers looks and personality in both realistic and anime styles.
All three rate between 3.5 and 4.5 in our ranking, and the builder is a proper part of that spread, not a line on a feature list.
Why a preset is a smart start
It seems odd, but a well-made preset usually beats your first custom attempt, because its author already put in the effort on the speech-style text you'd have skimped on.
So choose the closest match, chat for a few days, then rewrite the two or three boxes that grate. The rules you write after a real conversation are far better than the ones you write beforehand.
Treat edits as routine care
The best feature any builder can have is letting you edit afterwards. A flat, samey character usually has a description written by someone who'd never spoken to her, namely you, an hour before.
When the novelty fades, tightening her speech style and adding a couple of "never" rules beats switching apps, and it's free. Before you pay, make sure the app lets you do that. If it locks the character after setup, every letdown means starting from scratch.
