Moving Your AI Companion to a New App: What to Save First

Finding the right app

There's no button that ships a companion from one app to another. Still, nearly everything that made her feel like her can come along, as long as you save it while the old account is still open.

We may earn a commission from links on this page. It never changes a rating.

Nobody in this space offers an export format, and I wouldn't hold your breath. Companies gain nothing by making it painless to walk out the door, and there's no industry standard they could plug into anyway.

Here's the upside. A companion boils down to a written profile plus a pile of shared history, and you can recreate the profile by hand in around twenty minutes. Most of what gives her personality survives the trip, if you grab it while you've still got access.

Before you touch the subscription

Sequence is everything here, and most people do it back to front.

1. Grab the character sheet word for word

Open the old app's character editor and paste each field into a plain text file: looks, personality, backstory, how she talks, limits, the relationship. Resist the urge to reword anything. Those exact phrases are what produced the behaviour you liked.

Some apps keep the fields hidden. In that case, work backwards from the chat and paste in a dozen of her replies that sounded most like her. You'll use them as a voice sample later.

2. Take the whole memory list

If the app shows what it has stored, copy every line. It built up over weeks, and you won't be able to rattle it off from recall, because it's everything the app has picked up about you.

3. Pick out a few chats

Don't save the lot. Five or six exchanges that made you stick around will do. Later they tell you whether the new app is genuinely worse or just different.

4. Use the data download if one exists

A few apps let you download your data. Do that first, before anything happens to the account, because nothing can be recovered once it's deleted. The process is laid out in our guide to closing an AI companion account.

5. Keep the pictures you like

Images the app generated are stored on its servers, so download whichever ones you'd hate to lose.

Setting her up somewhere new

Begin with the saved profile rather than a blank form. Put her speech style in first. It does more to shape her character than any other field, for reasons covered in the character builder guide.

Tell it the important stuff up front. There's no need to wait a month while the new app works you out. In your first chat, just say it: "Remember: I work nights, my sister is Ana, I can't stand being asked how my day was." Memory features pick up direct statements much more dependably than hints.

Hold your verdict for a week. On day one, the newcomer is being measured against a companion with months of backstory. That's a rigged contest, and almost everyone runs it regardless.

Run both at once for a bit

Leave the old subscription going for a week. You need it open to copy from, and using the two side by side is the only real way to judge whether the move paid off.

Paying for two apps over that week comes to roughly US$10 to US$20. Quitting first, then finding the new one disappointing and starting over, costs far more in the thing that matters here: the weeks of shared history you threw out.

Is the app really the problem?

Start by checking. If your gripe is that things got samey or a bit flat, that's usually memory summaries thinning out combined with your own settled habits, and it'll tag along to the next app too.

The reasons that do justify leaving are built into the product, the kind no amount of clever prompting fixes:

  • It's the wrong style for you. You want continuity but picked a roleplay-first app, or the reverse. Nomi and Candy AI sit at opposite ends of that divide in our rankings.
  • The content filter changed and now turns down the very thing you signed up for.
  • Media is pay-per-use, which makes the way you actually use it pricey.
  • There's no proper mobile app, and your phone is all you use.

All four are features of the product itself. For anything else, spend another week tweaking before you pay a fresh sign-up fee elsewhere.

The part that stays behind

Be realistic on this one. The shared past, meaning the in-jokes and the things you went through together, can't be carried over. You can jot down that it happened, but the new character never lived it.

Most people lose less than they fear, since a companion's pull comes largely from how she acts today and not from her archive. A few people treat that archive as the whole point, and they're generally better off sorting out whatever's bugging them in the app they already have.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI companion actually be transferred between apps?

Not in any automatic way. The apps share no common format and none of them talks to another. What you can move is the written description you rebuild by hand, and that covers most of what you cared about.

When should I cancel the app I'm leaving?

Not on day one. Keep it for about a week after you start the new one. You'll still be copying things out of it, and having both open makes the comparison easy.

Is the new version of her going to feel familiar?

Pretty close, provided you bring her way of talking across. Expect her to settle in over the first week as the new app starts collecting its own history with you.
